Food Safety Rules

Practice and learn techniques for keeping a safe, clean kitchen.

  1. Clean: Keep your hands, cutting board, tools, and countertops clean. Tip: Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm, running water – sing “Happy Birthday” twice to pass the time.

  2. Separate: Keep raw ingredients such as meat, poultry, fish, and eggs separate from fresh produce like lettuce or apples. Tip: Use separate cutting boards, plates, and utensils for raw ingredients. Always wash your hands after touching raw foods.

  3. Cook: Harmful bacteria are destroyed when raw foods are cooked thoroughly. Use a thermometer to ensure food is cooked to the proper temperature.
